Just used Gopher for the first time since forever.
I was looking for pages about the small web, and ran across a link that went directly to a manifesto on a gopher server, only to find that the host wasn't allowing Chrome to browse its pages. So... off I went to find Gophie, a client that apparently couldn't find the page in question, but there it all was in it's monochrome glory.
Other than the WWW surpassing Gopher, I have only one real disappointment with it. The search engines Archie, Veronica, and Jughead never ever had any fun icons that resembled their namesakes.
Because of this, I made a mockup of a search called Betty, complete with her cartoon head. I know, one can hope, right?
In other news, I just saw an article that @punkreflex posted about the JonBenet Ramsey case, which, I confess, I could not read in its entirety, because I was immediately taken back to the years that followed, where some of us in the general public had a serious case of scandal fatigue sandwiched with an affliction of irreverent humour. By around the year 2000, on more than one occasion, friends of mine and myself included, had swapped Barbie heads with Lil (of Rugrats Lil & Phil fame), to come up with insensitively made "JonBenet Ramsey" and "Breast Cancer Barbie" dolls. Or, as some described her, "Barbie with Jaundice and Alopecia".
Honestly, if it wasn't JonBenet in the news, it was Tonya vs. "Why Me" Nancy, or The Bobbits. All I can say is thank GAWD we didn't take an exacto knife to our Billy dolls in a fit of rage against the media. Those guys are worth a pretty penny today. Okay, end rant, with apologies to Punkreflex and their friends.
